When You Want More of God but Don’t Feel the Desire

There are seasons when we know what we should want—but we don’t feel it.

We understand that Scripture matters.
We believe prayer is vital.
We trust that attentiveness to God shapes a faithful life.

Yet despite all of this, desire feels thin.

Not absent. Just muted. Dry. Harder to access than we expected—especially at the beginning of a new year, when fresh starts are supposed to feel energizing.

If that describes you, hear this clearly:
a lack of desire does not signal a lack of faith.

When Faithfulness Outpaces Feeling

Scripture never treats desire as something that appears automatically. Instead, the Bible presents it as something that grows through direction and practice.

The psalmist prays,

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you.” (Psalm 63:1)

That thirst did not arise by accident.
It developed through intentional pursuit.

Too often, we assume desire must come first. We wait to feel hungry before we approach God. However, Scripture consistently shows the opposite pattern: pursuit shapes desire over time.

This assumption is where many faithful women quietly stall. When appetite fails to appear, discouragement creeps in, and spiritual practices slowly fade.

Desire Can Be Cultivated

Here is the quiet promise many of us overlook:

“For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13)

God does not merely empower obedience.
He also forms desire itself.

Because of this, desire is not something you must generate. God develops it gradually as you keep turning toward Him—even on days when that turning feels mechanical or unremarkable.

For this reason, lasting spiritual growth rarely comes through dramatic resets. Instead, it grows through faithful return.

Becoming Thirsty Again

There are seasons when seeking God feels unsatisfying. Scripture seems dry. Prayer feels thin. And yet, something deeper continues to take shape beneath the surface.

As we keep returning, God slowly reorients our hearts. Through His Word, He reveals who He truly is—and who we are before Him. Over time, desire begins to grow, often quietly and without fanfare.

This understanding forms the foundation of Becoming Thirsty, a free six-day, Scripture-centered challenge designed to help cultivate desire for God through simple, faithful resolutions.

Not big goals.
Not spiritual pressure.
Not performance.

Instead, each day invites you to return to Scripture, reflect thoughtfully, and take one small step of obedience.

A Gentle Way to Begin

If you want more of God—but don’t feel the desire you wish you had—this challenge was created for you.

Becoming Thirsty helps you:

  • aim your heart toward God again
  • practice faithful pursuit without pressure
  • trust God to shape desire in His time

You don’t need to feel ready.
